Overview:

Street Level Airway Management® (SLAM®) is a general system of teaching basic and advanced airway management skills that are useful regardless of where emergency airway management occurs. The system is based on the SLAM Concept, which states: "Most airway techniques used in anesthesiology can be generally applied to a variety of areas where emergency airway management is performed by practitioners outside the operating room and hospital."

Lectures and hands-on will cover the following:

  1. SLAM® Airway Flowchart (Lecture) – Prior Planning Prevents Poor Performance
  2. Airway Anatomy and Assessment (DIDACTIC)
  3. Oxygenation and Ventilation in Adults (DIDACTIC) – If Your Patient Can't Breathe – NOTHING ELSE MATTERS!!!
  4. Direct Laryngoscopy and Tracheal Intubation (DIDACTIC)
  5. Confirmation of Tracheal Intubation and Monitoring of Lung Ventilation (DIDACTIC)
  6. Pharmacology of Airway Management (DIDACTIC)
  7. Rapid Sequence Induction and Intubation in Adults (DIDACTIC)
  8. Rescue Ventilation (DIDACTIC) - THE BRIDGE OF LIFE
  9. Direct laryngoscopy and Tracheal Intubation: FUNDAMENTALS OF SUCCESS (Hands-on Station)
  10. Rescue Ventilation (Hands-on Station)
  11. VIDEOLARYNGOSCOPY: Primary and Rescue Intubation Strategies (Hands-on Station)
  12. FROM BOUGIE & BURP to HELP AND BEYOND – SIMPLIFYING DIFFICULT LARYNGOSCOPY (Hands-on Station)
  13. One-Lung Ventilation & Fiberoptic Placement of Double-Lumen Tracheal Tubes (Hands-on Station)
  14. Porcine Cricothyrotomy Lab (Hands-on Lab featuring percutaneous dilational cricothyrotomy, trans-tracheal jet ventilation, and surgical cricothyrotomy)
Didactic information is covered in hours 1 through 4. In hours 5 through 10 the hands-on portion is presented to include a cricothyrotomy workshop using porcine laryngeal-tracheal segments. A short written test is also taken by each attendee. Participants receive a certificate of completion.

AMA PRA Category 1 CME's:

The International Trauma Anesthesia and Critical Care Society (ITACCS) is accredited by the Accreditation Council on Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing education for physicians and physician assistants. ITACCS designates this educational activity for 10 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s) TM. Physicians and Physician Assistants should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

AANA CE (for CRNA's):
